A short summary of the books I read
House on Mango Street By Sandra Cisneros: For me "The House on Mango Street" spoke a lot about growing up and gaining confidence and acceptance in your self. The short stories told at each chapter were very relatable and exploited a lot of messages about growing up and the way we treat people. This novella is a great book full of rich literary skills and writing knowledge. You will be able to read along with Esperanza as she experiences her life and be able to see what happens to her through a great perspective.
Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood By Benjamin Alire Saenez: Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood spoke a lot about the troubles of being a teenager in a time of war poverty and racism. Sammy lives in a dirt poor burro and is surrounded by violence, in the graduating class of 1969 Sammy must deal with gringo racism and great losses of life. Sammy and Juliana is a great book for teens and people of all ages it teaches you about life and the challenges some people face.
A Long Way Gone By Ismail Beah: A long way gone is a gripping story about Ismail a boy who lived in Sierra Leone when the rebels attacked his home he lost his family. He searched the land for safety but always had to run from rebels or hostile villagers. At only 13 years old he was picked up by the government's army to fight the rebels. Normally a kind hearted boy he finds him self fighting and killing in a terrible war. But hope is not lost as he is taken to a rehabilitation center and escapes to America for a better life. This is a great gripping story that is hard to pout down filled with sadness and hope.
Antigone By Sophocles: Antigone was a Greek theater play about a girl named Antigone she was the niece of Thebes new king Creon, Polynices Antigones brother fought in an army against Thebes Antigone's other brother Eteocles kills Polynices but gets killed also. Creon decides that Polynices will not have a proper burial and will be left to rot in the sun out side the city walls. Antigone thinks this is wrong and wishes to burry he brother even though its against the law. When Creon finds out he sentences Antigone to death by locking her in a stone chamber. Upon hearing what happened Creon's own son and wife the Queen kill them selves, Creon rushes to try to save Antigone for he realizes his wrong but she is all ready dead. This is a Greek tragedy so this does happen this story mostly taught me how to write my script in the Greek theater play project.
Divergent By Veronica Roth: Divergent takes place in future Chicago in a society that is divided into five factions, each one describes a different type of personality that a person could have--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). At age 16 all of the children must chose witch fraction they want to devote their lives to. Beatrice the main character choses Dauntless The fraction for the brave and fearless people and surprises everyone in her family as she leaves them behind. She then changes her name to Tris she then has to train and prove her self to the Dauntless, But she is a divergent meaning she fits into more than one fraction this could save her or destroy her. This is a exciting book for young adults it keeps you alert and on the edge of your seat waiting for more.
Into the Wild By Jon Krakauer: Into the Wild is a story about a young man named Christopher McCandless who ventured into the Alaskan wilderness with only 10 pounds of rice, a .22 caliber rifle, several boxes of rifle rounds, a camera, and a small selection of reading material. It is said that McCandless survived for 119 days before he died of starvation sometime around the week of August 18, 1992. Krakauer's book explores Christopher McCandless life and adventures before he made his journey into the wild. It is a interesting and enlightening book with many messages hidden in it's pages open for interpretation by the reader.
Hatchet By Gary Paulsen: When Brian Robinson's plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness he is in deep trouble. A modern boy with no survival knowledge he must fight with nature for his own survival, over coming challenge after challenge. Brian learns many things about life and him self during his time surviving in the wild. He grows up from a boy into a young man in physical ways and mental ways. This book talks about growing up and survival thorough difficult times. It is a rather short book but still very enjoyable it is a great book for all ages to read and has lots of inner meanings.
