Thesis
During Nixon's Presidency from 1969 - 1974 he coined the term The War on Drugs, famously saying “drugs are public enemy number one.” The government poured money into hiring more police to fight the great war on drugs. Ever since the war has raged between the government, the drug dealers, and users. Drug use has gone up and illegal violations of people's rights by police has increased. This war proposed by the government has proved to be ineffective and damaging to our society. This is particularly evident when you look at how this “war” treats minorities. It is used as an excuse by police to illegally stop, search, and detain minorities for drug use. This imprisons a vast majority of people for small pointless charges. Ending the war on drug means ending a failed experiment and putting an end to a system that was created to specifically target and imprison minorities. This will mean that as Americans citizens we can feel safe without fear of illegal action by police.
