Stereotype ActivityWe started off this project by doing an activity on institutionalized racism in our society. We did an activity where we all went up to big sheets of paper and wrote common stereotypes of different races on it (a picture is shown on the left). We rotated around the class to each of the 4 categories that represented 4 of the main raceal groups in our society Mexican, Asian Black, and White. We just had to write out any of the stereotypes that we have heard or tuts people commonly associate with that group. The main idea of this was to introduce us to the idea of institutionalized racism and stereotypes in our society by showcasing the stereotypes that already exist in our society. We then went into a lesson and a discussion on why we think this is a big problem. For me this was a very powerful activity because it put a face on the reality of this issue that we face every day. It was very eye opening for the whole class I think to face this issue head on by seeing all these stereotypes in one place. What this taught me was just how many stereotypes there are in todays society. We were also shown how limmeting they can be for the person facing them.

Whistling Vivaldi Reading |
We read this story in class, it was about a African American man who would whistle classical music when he walked down the street to avoid social stereotypes of African Americans at the time. What this reading showed was just by this man whistling classical music he was able to escape some of the stereotypes that surround black people. Just by doing that he in the eyes of other people was seen as educated, formal, and non dangerous. Where as before instead of walking past him on the street they would have crossed it or on purpose to avoid him.

Project Description |
In this project we started by writing a personal story about ourselves where we were stereotyped or discriminated against. After the story was written we created an illustration that would go along with the story. These were called That Cards, a few would be read to the class every day. Next we started on our personal piece this could be a drawing, spoken word, poem, or ted talk style presentation. As we worked on our personal portion to the project we started the process of creating our videos. We started with a proposal of our video ideas. This proposal had to go over what our video idea was and give research about the topic and talk about how we were going to pull it off. Then we created a storyboard that outlined how our video was going to go scene by scene. Then we filmed our final video and presented it at exhibition.
